Doggone Country

Doggone CountryDoggone is a collection of Musical Misfits between the ages of 19 to 55 with one thing in common, we love the music we play... and we play it , 'cause we love it.

True, we all toured across Europe and some of us have jammed with our musical hero Dale Watson (for almost 3 hours)... and one of us even shook hands with Johnny Cash at the tender age of three.

Best not get into what the rest of us has been up to...

However, what truly defines Doggone, is the uncompromising love of country music, and the desire to go out and have a damn good time whenever we're getting on that stage... or floor... or grass... or street corner... or whatever is available to us.

You may know some of our songs, you may not. We don't align our show to the latest charts or most up to date dances. We do however pick the songs that get us moving, and sometimes maybe even thinking a little about ourselves and the world around us. No other style of music does this better than Country.

And we love to watch you all dance, be it the Two-Step, a Walz, Line Dance or whatever your limbs make you do... don't categorise, JUST DANCE!

Hank Williams Senior, Waylon, and now Hank III propbaply sum up the general sphere of our influences.
Not forgetting Johnny Cash, Elvis, Dwight, Dale... (it's a long, long list.)

Spur

sour country duo

British Country Award Winners, Spur was originally created by Mark back in 2001, after the making of a home made album, which he only produced 10 copies of and these were given to family and friends. A name was needed for the album, and after much deliberation Mark decided on Spur. Around this time Mark was working a 9 to 5 job, however, a year later Spur was still at the forefront of his mind and he finally began to realise that the dream of Spur was where his heart lay. In 2002 he could no longer continue working 9 to 5 with the knowledge that life is short and would he ever regret not progressing with Spur - so he bit the bullet and took that chance.

Mark spent night after night sitting in a room with just his guitar, learning and writing songs he’d always dreamed of performing whilst having guitar lessons from Bobby Reed and also being taught to drink Cider..

Mark had a cousin James who was also musically talented, and in 2005 Mark decided to make that all important call to James and said “I’m going to do this, do you want in”, from this moment on Spur the duo was born. They started playing in a local bar every Thursday night, free of charge - practising but also entertaining the locals.

Soon after word started to spread around the country scene that there was new talent in the form of a young country duo playing in a bar. New faces started to appear in the crowd, and these faces where of country venue organisers. Lynne Hancock from the Big W (Weston-Super-Mare) got chatting to the guys and asked what they knew about the country scene, to which they replied not much, from this conversation she invited them to her club.

The guys went along to the Big W where Gemma Fairweather happened to be performing that evening, Lynne introduced them to Gemma and she kindly gave them some advice and tips. They were asked that night if they would like to perform a couple of songs and without any hesitation they jumped at the chance. Spur performed 2 numbers and went down a storm with the club. From then on other venue organisers visited the local pub, where Spur played and this led to them picking up some bookings on the country scene.

In August 2005 the guys went along to the Jim Silverthorn’s Country Music Trade Fair (held in Keynsham) just to listen to acts for experience and hopefully to pick up a few tips by watching the performers. Spur did try to book a spot a few months before the Trade Fair but never heard anything back. Kalibre then took to the stage, and as there set was drawing to a close Bobby Reed mentioned to the audience that there was a new young country duo in the room going by the name of Spur, they are very good and definitely worth booking. Mark was then approached and asked “What time are you performing”, he replied “We don’t have a spot”, the guy asked “If I could get you a spot would you play” once again they jumped at the chance. From this they went on to get a spot the following evening in the line dance venue, Spur retired to their van and started working on their 30 minute set. They were also offered a spot on the Main Stage to which they accepted and were invited back for two spots the following year. Jim Silverthorn was very impressed and has supported the guys ever since.
Following this Spur were asked by Hoppy Horton to join them and appear as a special guest in the Saggy Bottom Boys Road Show and then were asked by Kalibre to support them in a Merle Haggard Tribute Show. Thanks to Bobby Reed, Bob Dixon and Dale James for there support and backing.

Spur are now going from strength to strength and are working full time as a Multi Award Winning Country Music Duo, they are loving what they do and are very happy and grateful for everybody’s help along the way.

Voted rising star of the year at the 2009 British Country Music Awards!

Although Kayleigh has been singing since the age of five, It has only been in the last few years that her interest in Country Music has increased, after viewing The Judds ‘Love Can Build a Bridge', she was transfixed on the true passion in country music and the true meaning it has to people's lives. She made the decision there and then that country was right for her, to not only reflect on her life and the importance of those around to support her, but most of all to express her feelings and share this with country fans and other country artists. With large influences from the likes of Gretchen Wilson, Lorrie Morgan and Billie Jo Spears, Kay'D' tries to entertain those country fans with their favourite aspect of country.

Texas Tornadoes

texas tornadoes

Formed late in 2004 out of a long-standing dream of Pete (Stothard) Texas Tornados suddenly hit the southern scene, especially the South London area near where they all live, like a ..... well, like a 'tornado' really! Within less than two months the circuit was buzzing with reports and recommendations about the exciting new outfit that already had its own fan-base growing larger as each week passed. By the summer of 2009 not only had they rocketed up the ladder to one of THE most sought-after bands in the UK but they found themselves as nominees for the "BCM Hall of Fame" awards in September!

The lead singer (Pete Stothard) - who also plays rhythm guitar - was of course well known already on the Line & Western Dance scene, having been at the forefront of the clutch of 'celebrity' Line Dance Instructors that sprang up when line dancing had that tremendous impact on the public at large. Having been brought up in the world of Country music from an early age (his parents were always staunch Country lovers who attended the festivals - and local clubs - regularly) dancing was a natural step forward for Pete, as at that stage it was being done only to his beloved Country music. From there it was just a matter of time really before his childhood dream of singing it - and for a living - became a reality.

On keyboards, guitar, vocals & harmonies there's a superb addition to the band - Stuart Payne from the Yarmouth area, who has played in the past with many of the big names in Country music (including Circuit Judge, Sidewinder, and most recently Gemma Fairweather) and who has a pedigree in Country music second to none. In gaining a top class player like Stuart the band had not only gained an exceptional talent but it gave Texas Tornados a bright new, lively, younger aged line-up to break yet more barriers - since starting the band back in 2006 Texas Tornados has grown from strength to strength, and as their latest addition early in 2010 Stuart is already a major part of the band's current wave of success.

On lead guitar the band AGAIN got a top-quality player in Roger McKew - he also has a long pedigree in music: originally a Country guitarist he was coaxed into the "mainstream" entertainment world & over the years was guitarist with such household names as Lonnie Donegan, Shakin' Stevens, & Freddie Starr (to name but a few) until finally, in 2007, he'd had enough of that world and came back to his Country roots again. Later that year he was invited to join "Texas Tornados" and now is happy as Larry with his new career, and the band themselves were proud to welcome another top-rate player like Roger into their team.

Despite the fame Pete achieved through his line-dance teaching and demonstrations the band is far from being restricted to that sector - although they can hold their own with almost any of the established dance acts they can, and do, often play to totally non-line dance audiences with equal success.... as long as it's Country they're happy to play, and it's as simple as that. Pete is a total extrovert, and when the audience is up for fun it's nothing to see him leap off the stage while he's singing, join in the dancing, and generally throw all of his (considerable) energy into making sure the audience goes home completely and utterly 'entertained' - he doesn't know any other way - and his nickname of 'The Cockney Cowboy' comes from his general manner, outlook on life, and his insistence that life is good... as long as you always give it a helping hand. Be entertained therefore, each and every night, by the irrepressible Texas Tornados and go home with that 'happy' buzz afterwards.
